Fog looking splotchy? Volumetric fog lights haunted with ghosting? Look no further we’ll cover some of the basic solutions to help improve the quality of your fog and have it looking it’s best in no time.
The first solution to most fog problems really originates in the HDRP Default Settings, this should be your first stop when your fog looks awful. Tweak the settings here first to see if there’s any reasonable change both under both lighting drop downs.
The next place to check would be Volume Fog Settings themselves under (in this case) the Global Fog Volume though this may be a local volume in your project. Typically hitting the “ALL” button will improve the settings but adjusting these values will pinpoint the issue and resolve it.
The final place to check would be the Global HDRP Frame Settings in the Project Settings menu (Edit>Project Settings) here you can look under the lighting tab and mess with things like Reprojection which deals with the smoothness of the slices of your volumetric fog.
Hopefully in these settings you can find the issue with your terrible fog quality, if tweaking these settings doesn’t yield significant results it’s entirely possible your problem may be specific to the version of Unity or the lighting in your scene and require further research that goes beyond the scope of this article. Until next time, happy coding.
